Although you can carve against the grain with some success, the cut will be jagged and have a ripped appearance. In order to get a nice, clean cut, always carve with the grain.

Besides the top quality of Brandant's wood grain article, consider wood grain to be like the hair/fur on a dog's back. First, it varies from one breed to another (one tree species' wood to another). Second, you have varying degrees of success running your fingers through the dog's fur in various directions. |
