Default Difficulty Carveing please give me some ideas :D

Okay so today finally my staff was dry well one of like 50

soo i started sanding it with 100 grit then 220 wiped it down with a wet cloth then dry and it was so smooth to the touch on every spot and the knots smoothed down as well (not much i like the knots)

Well then i took my chisels and tried to make just a simple ring around it above where i plan to put the leather holder

When i did i cracked the wood not bad but was horrible i fixed it lucky me took my knife cut it and sand it then used my knife and finally made the ring sanded it and it looks half decent for my first try sapose

But yea i was wondering if any of you had any better ideas on how to make patterns

What knifes i could use because i dont think i have the right kind

easy beautiful patterns to put into it

And how to do them

This staff im making for my grandpa so i want it to be the best i can make it

So Thank you to anyone who can answer this it is very important to me

im not 100% sure what kind of wood it is i live in Ontario Canada and its White

Don't know what all kinds of knives and v-tools you have, but do you have a woodburner. You can woodburn all your designs on your walking stick instead of carving. Otherwise, if you have a good v-tool, I'd start with it to outline your design.

Arausio, There are some great carvers in your area and carving clubs. Try to contact one of the clubs. A list of them can be found on the left side of ths page under carving clubs or google : Ontario Wood Carvers Association (OWCA) They can see what wood you are using and help you with tools you may need,
