I've been reading around the forums and various websites and what not (please forgive me for typos, my W key isn't working right I may miss some) and I've noticed a lot of different types of carving and I don't know the difference. For instance "releif" and stuff like that. I know what whimseys are and vaugely what ould be considered widdleing. So really I was just wondering if somebody could clarify all the common terms for me. |

Take a look at each section on the forum, you will find pictures that members post of that types of carving. Hope that helps. Dave |

Try the typing the style of carving you are interested in learning about in the "SEARCH" function above and you'll find tons of useful threads. Also, if you go through the tutorials on this resource link it will help you familiarize yourself with the different types of carving..... Carvers resource links for October

One way to think of carving is that it ranges from patterns cut into flat surfaces (chip carving) to "in-the-round" figures (caricatures, animals, sculptures), with every variation in between. Or, you could separate carvings by the materials used: found wood, golf balls, exotic lumber, logs - or by the tools used: knives (whittling), chisels and gouges, power cutters, chainsaws.

Thanks guys, I did actually try that without a whole lot of success ( I'm kind of dense :P ) but I just found a link to a thread in the similar post thing down there. It helped me figure out all i wanted. |

Perhaps your library can get you a copy of How to Carve Wood by Richard Butz it has all the different style of carvings in it, also www.carvingpatterns.com had a lot of free tutorial and different styles.
