Hi everyone, I love this board. I read it every single day. I just have not posted for a while because my sister just lost her oldest son. He was only 25 years old. He was not only my nephew but he was a freind and fishing buddy of mine. I had a hard time going up the see him laying there. My sister and her younger son had to talk me into going up. That was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. That young man was only five years older than my oldest. I miss him everyday. I am back to feeling okey now. I want to do something that will remind me of him. I am not that good yet so I was going to carve some and use a dremel tool for some of it to help with the detail. I was thinking of maybe a boy sitting and fishing from shore. I was wondering if some people could tell me some of the tips for the dremel I might need. Thank you, and every one have a great day. |

Hi Joe, First off, I am so sorry for your family's loss. I am sure it's especially hard because he was so young.... working with your hands does seem to take one's mind off of things so your project is a good one. Regarding what bits we use, everyone has their personal favorites. I do think most power carvers agree that the smallest ruby flame is a popular bit. Fine tip diamonds come in handy for fine detail work also....and I like various sizes of round or ball shapes too. But it will be trial and error on your part to find which bits work best for you. What ever you do, DO NOT BUY A BIG SET of bits....you will be wasting your $$ and have a bunch of them that you will never use. I am going on what you said about doing fine detail.... if you want to do some roughing with power, some of the small Kutzal bits in 1/8 shafts will work in your Dremel too. Let the rpms do the work for you. Good luck with your project. ps. One good supplier on line for these carving bits, is woodcarverssupply.com Last edited by susieq; 08-23-2009 at 07:53 PM. Hi Joe, I am trully sorry for your and your sister's loss, especially since he was just a young man. These things shouldn't happen. Good luck with your carving.

Joe, sorry to hear of your loss, good buddies are hard to find.. I dont use many dremel bits in carving becuse they get away from me and dig in the wrong places, but i use dental bits in a small wecheer v/s hand tool for them really hard to detail places.. ask your dental assistant next time your at the dentist, mine saves them and cleans them in the autoclave for me so their sterile but cant be reused for dentistry..
