Default Detail Knives

Does anyone know what brand of detail knife Gene Messer uses in his videos and where to purchase one? I am also looking to purchase a good set of micro gouges, but am unsure of what brand is the better one to buy. - Steve

Hi Steve,

Gene uses Ron Wells/Mike Shipley knives. You can find them at Knives .

He actually uses the 1 1/8 knife which isn't shown there, the 1 3/8 is close and a very knice knive ( they all are) but here is the one I believe Gene uses: - RON WELLS DETAIL KNIFE - 1 1/8" BLADE #229103 It's just a good all around short bladed knife, it can hog and do detail, it's only limit is it's length. If you do mostly small carvings, this knife and the 1 3/8 detail are wonderful knives.

Thanks Corey!! I believe one cannot have too many knives! I may end up purchasing both.

I recently purchased the 1 3/8 detail knife, and am really, really happy with it.

Ron Wells or Wells/Shipley knives are toted as flat plane knives and they do work awesome for that but they are one of the most used knives around for about any type of carving. It's easily the most popular knife at my carving club and we don't have any flat plane carvers. They are easy to sharpen as well because they are flat ground. Very nice knives Steve and becareful, they are very sharp!
