You can expect nearly as many answers as there are carvers. I make my own knives, you can see them here:
BfloBif: Stock Knives by Bflobif

The pic is old, I no longer put the loop on the handles. Have to update that one day.

Bill,

Brian (bflobif) is spot on. This question is a very old one around here, and everyone has their own opinion of what constitutes a really good knife. Also like Brian, I make my own for the most part and rarely ever use the "store-boughts" I started out wiith anymore. Some like a little flex, some like a rigid blade. Some like a really dramatic taper to the point and some prefer a a bit more width for strength. The question comes down to what is right for you and you are the only one that can answer it. Do some research and look at the blade's shape and the handle design, and think about what is a good fit for you and the way that you carve.

L.P.

A bit old, but lots of suggestions here: best detail knife

I prefer Ralph Longs detail knife.

Allen Goodman makes a great knife as does Helvie. Really, it's a matter of personal preference.

For really fine detail, the knife I use the most is made by Lee Ferguson. The blade is 7/8" long with about 3/4" sharpened so I don't know exactly which model it is, either the A4 or A5.

I am only new at carving. But I have made my two carving knives from a HSS metal cutting saw blade. One I am extremely happy with, the other needs a heap more work to get it as sharp as I would like.

I also have a STAR ( Old faithful ) apologies to Lynn. But what I am about to do is to buy one that comes really sharp so I can confirm to myself what sharp actually is.

Pete
