I also get quite a lot of use out of my homemade plywood holding fixture, like THOR's. I think the plans ae in a back issue of WCI. For space.storage and quality, I would also go with the flex cut set. One handle and doz of gouge profiles to pick from. The 11 piece set is great, I think they have a new one out with a few more gouge profiles, one of there knives, and a strop, all in a handy storge case or a roll. Like everyone else said Keep Safe and come home. Thats a request from an old Marine, not an order. I know you get enought of them already. Duncan |

Michael, I can't help you as relief carving is not my thing. You already have your answers here anyway. I'm just chiming in to say thanks for your service. It is much appreciated.

If I were going away without access to suppliers etc....I would take a strop, some 400, 800, 1200 and 2000 sandpaper ( one sheet of each as you can cut off a strip off the end and lasts a loooong time) I good knife, possibly a folder like Ricks Kershaw modification or the Oar carver, if you can afford it maybe even the flexcut "carvin' Jack", and the set of flexcut interchangeable chisels with the handles..I think the kit has 2 handles? this would not take up a lot of room, but you could carve most of what you want I think...being a carver in the round I would probably have a couple more knives ...Happy oops forgot, you might throw in a piece of thick (1/4 inch?) plexiglass, maybe 4x4 or 4 x 6 in to use the sandpaper on...you need a smooth solid backing for the sandpaper to sharpen the tools.
