Default Cyanoacrylate glue

Where is a good place to get cyanoacrylate glue? I am confused about what to buy because I have seen things like instant bond activater and instant bond CA glue. Can someone explain this to me?

The CA glue dries in seconds but the activator causes it to dry immediately. A lot of model and hobby shops sell the two.

Isn't that just the long chemical name for regular old super glue? Some have accellerators you can drop on for instant bonding but it's just super glue, available almost anywhere..... by the way, it contains cyanide so don't woodburn over it because the fumes will be very dangerous.

I think I will just use normal super glue since I only somewhat needed the glue and only for one simple thing. Also I wouldn't woodburn it since I am using it for hardening the edge of a letter opener.

I didn't realize super glue had cyanide in it. Does anyone know if you use it on a letter opener and DUH stab yourself with it, is it a danger?

I've used so very much of the stuff if there were danger ...... I wouldn't be here typing. I think the only danger is inhaling the wood burning fumes. IMHO getting the stuff on your skin is sure irritating (to get off) but not dangerous .

Not too likely, unless it's dirty and you get an infection. In the for-what-it's-worth category, when i had my quad bypass surgery last year, they used CA glue (Medical grade) to seal the skin back together - no staples, no stitches, just glue. Worked like a champ.

Wanda,
Stabbing yourself is always a danger, whether there is super glue involved, or not. In fact, if you do stab yourself, just use superglue to put yourself back together. They use it all the time in the hospital.

Super glue is wonderful stuff and also very annoying when you accidently glue yourself to something....been there, done that...LOL.
Years ago, my first carving teacher taught us to use it on very fragile parts of our carvings to strengthen it so we could finsh that detail... I still put it on fragile stuff. You don't want to do this if it's something you are going to stain though as the wood will not take the stain in that area. But I paint most of my work so that doesn't apply.

Good ole acitone (nail polish remover) is good for ungluing yourself when you have an accident... Just don't woodburn it or drink it and you will not have to worry about the cyanide.

Hi DMH,

Nice idea with the super glue and letter opener. Be sure to post a photo when you finish it. I'm working on one now but it sitting unfinished.
