Question cutting MDF-will scroll saw work?

I've been using a Roto-Zip to cut out whimsical letters from Luann but now want to make them thicker so I tried 1/2" MDF but I've broken 3 bits in 15 minutes. I think a scroll saw will work better for me but am unsure whether it will cut MDF. The blade looks so delicate. Can anyone give me some guidance? If it will work, which kind/size should I get? I don't have a large garage where I could keep a table set up.

mchurchill,
I'd suggest you post your question on the Scroll Saw Workshop forum as well. There are many of us here who use a scroll saw, but the people over there are scroll saw fanatics <grin>

The reason you are breaking your bits is that the glue content causes excessive heat to more or less take the temper out of them. I would suggest using something with slower RPMs. Like a variable speed jig saw or scroll saw preferabably a scroll. That is my opinion. Ron
