Nick,
i think you are refuring preshaped carvings ether cut out with a bandsaw or made with a duplicating machine

its a way to get many carvings completed quicker, or faster results from a particular project

basicly pre removal of waste material from a project before you get it,

you have bandsaw cutouts 3d blocky projects
and roughouts from a duplicator which is done in the round therefore more bulk material is renoved from the stock..

if you start with a knife or gouge on a block of wood and proceed to carve a project you will at some time pass through the stage in the carving that could be called a roughout, in fact its all refured to as roughout until you start into carving in the details as i understand it...

I consider it is the simplest of terms

A cutout , is a carving blank made using square cuts.

First .. Bandsaw front or back pattern line.

Then tape the pieces back together to rebuild pattern lines

then Bandsaw the right or left side

this will leave a CUTOUT pattern carving blank.

A roughout is developed using a duplicator and removes the corners leaving a more finished carving blank.

So a cut out will be more square and the roughout more rounded to produce the same carving blank.

Hope that makes sense

places to find rough outs

http://www.roughouts.com/

http://www.chippingaway.com/

http://bishopwoodcarving.com/

there's 3 with good selection

at .roughouts.com there are a couple rough outs that allow you to carve 5 similar caricatures from a single rough out, not many places offer such items and your pretty much locked into the single caricature, without much room for deviation...

good luck

This is how I always think of it (and anyone, correct me if I'm wrong).

A cut-out is just that. You cut out the pattern from the bandsaw.

Then you make a rough-out by using knives, gouges, etc. to round it out and make the basic (rough) shape.

Then the fun part comes - details!
