I am interested in carving characters like little 3-D santas, elves... I saw the project in the magazine about making little santa money holders... What kind of tools do I need? Are there instructional videos? Thanks |

Welcome to the forum! There are lots of instructional videos on wood carving, but not for this specific pattern. I carved one Gift-bearing Santa . I used a knife, a 6mm V tool, and a 10mm #3 palm gouge to do the carving. If you're really just getting started, I'd recommend buying the beginner's set from Rick at Little Shavers Wood Carving Supply He sends you a safety glove, knife, some gouges, etc., and they're all SHARP when you receive them. As to the wood, call Dale at Heinecke Wood Products and order some basswood in whatever sizes you think you'd like to carve. Dale's wood is primo quality and less expensive than most. He ships fast, as well. Claude |

Thanks so much! Great job on the gift santa... I saw that exact article and what inspired me to give it a try... will be getting the set at little shavers and will check out the link you sent to get the wood. I have a few fun ideas and I will post photos when I get something done ![]() Thanks for the welcome! Sky |

Just a suggestion from one who has left a lot of blood on his carvings. Get in the habit of wearing a glove now. It might save you a lot of pain later. Good luck. It's a great addiction! Dan |

I know this is a set, and you often get items you never use, but I feel this is an exception. The tools are great and I have used them with the addition of a couple of knives to do quite a few of the carvings in the holiday issue. These have really made a difference for me, compared to the cheapo tools I have bought before. Flexcut Tools from Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers
