Default Comics and carved figures

Hi,

I´m interested in carving comics. Are there anyone who can give some advise to a beginner. There are many of you who carves caricatures, I believe. I´m from Sweden and we don´t have so many interested in this sort of carving.

I am not a caricature carver, but here is something to think about. Most comics are copyrighted properties, so procede with a bit of caution. It would seem that you can carve all of these you want for you own posession, but you may well run into trouble if you try to sell them.

Just as a matter of courtesy, it might not hurt to contact the publishers or artists and ask their permission to carve for your own purposes.

Valcommen !
Could you give us a little more information about what you want to do? Are you wanting to carve comical charactors in a three dimensional form? or a relief carving that resembles a comic strip?

Hi Mats,

Not sure what type of "comics" you are interested in carving, but Sweeden has a rich history in caricature carving.

You can probably find a lot of information about men like Axel Pettersen, Herman Rossell, the Trygg family, Emil Janel.

They are highly respected in the caricature carving world and you can no doubt learn a lot by studying their work. You may have an easier time finding information on them than we here in the states do.

I too am interested in caricature so if you ever want to bounce any ideas around, feel free to post on the board or drop me a personal message. I'm always open to talking carving!

Mats,

I would think as long as it is not for sale you shouldn't have too much trouble, although I don't know what laws may be like in Sweeden.

Can you give us an example of a couple comic characters you would like to carve?

Mats,
When my Father in Law retired, he took up carving and one of his first projects was cartoon characters. He started with Disney, then went to Looney Tunes, and all of his favorites, until eventually he built a shelf patterned after a house [lots of little steps] to display them. To be honest; they were basicly scroll sawed, a little carving then painted in bright colors, but you could take it to the next level in carving. They were quite simple but people got a chuckle out of them.
Half of the fun for him was the search for a pattern that suited him. You should be able to find lots of printed material, or use a google search to line up your favorites, use a copier to get them to size, saw out some blanks and start carving. You can paint them with acrylics from a craft store. Keep it simple at first.
It seems to me that this would be a simple way to get some of the basics of carving. It worked for 'ol Abner.
Sounds like a fun pursuit.

Here's a link to the proprietary claims of the "Capp" firm, that still controlls all of Al Capp's "\Little Abner" comics. This strip has been out of print for over thirty years, and the copyrights are still in effect. They also list a contact where exceptions MAY be granted. My bet would be that most strips still cary their copyrights.

Al,
I'm sorry, I think I think I confused you. Lil Abner was a comic strip, Ol' Abner was my Father in Laws nickname. He did pick up that name from the comic strip because he was a big ol' Ohio farmboy, growing up in the Depression and dirt poor. They was soo poor..............
BTW, I enjoyed the link to Lil Abner. It also reminded me that Dad had the peculier habit of never signing any of his work; and had no interest in selling any of it, even though people often offered money for his work. He did handyman jobs to pay for his carving.
He must have known what you are trying to point out, and did not want to get caught in a copywrite lawsuit.
