Default clear paint?

I'm very new here and have not painted any of my stuff yet, I wanted to know if there is a clear paint that would allow the grain to show through under the color.

There is a clear acrylic "paint", but most clear finishes are usually not called "paint". They are better known as varnishes or lacquer. Both are available in spray and liquid form. the varnishes are available in oil based and water based varieties.

Check, hardware, paint and art supply stores.

If you mean a paint that provides color but allows the grain to show through, many people use acrylic "washes". They dilute the acrylic paint with water so that it doesn't mask the wood grain.

You can use thinned oil paints also. Heck - even watercolors work well.

Look through the posts in the Finishing and Painting section for previous discussions such as this one:

You may want to look at dies, you can get them in most art stores. All you need it the 3 primary colors and you can mix up anything you want.
