Default Carving A Wooden Pannel

Heya everyone!

I'm Matt and I've been bitten by an odd bug. I have been mulling over carving out some patterns on wood pannels for several weeks and I do have some experience in drawing so I've nod oubt in my ability to make a worthwhile image. However, I've no experience at all in wood carving.

This site shows an example of what I would like to do. http://www.nongnit.net/teakcarving.htm Clearly, I don't expect to carve ont his level or using such expensive wood as high grade teak to start with. However, could anyone please give me some advice on what types of chisels to buy? Knives? What about sanding? How would I stain in those intricate ridges? Also, can anyone suggest a good wood to start out with that has a similar grain to teak, something that the hand motions with translate well to when I consider using that quality of wood later on? FInally, how do I buy the wood; specifically what I mean is, do I buy simple planks from a lumber yard or is there another reasource I should be using?

I know I've asked alot of questions and I thank you all for your consideration!

Hope to hear from you soon!

Whew! Slow down Matt.... You've got the horse way ahead of the cart. Your goals are noble but it's going to take some doing to get from Point A to Point B.

As for tools, your best bet is to give The Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers or Little Shavers a call and tell them what you want to do and get their advice on what to buy. If I was you, even though I have aspirations to produce DiVinci type work, I'd start out slow with a very basic set. Both organizations sell starter sets.

As for wood, there again I'd start simple and make a couple of relief carvings first using an easy wood to work with such as basswood. You can order it over the net or stop by a carving store or if you live in an area of the country that has lumber yards and such you may even be able to pick up some cheap at a yard.

Finally, as to how to start I'd suggest reading the following post from Susan... Levels in Relief Just another example of the generosity of the carvers on this forum and of the excellence of Woodcarving Illustrated to host such a fine website!

Just remember, we've all had to learn to crawl before we could walk..... that is unless you happen to be Michael Angelo incarnate! Ha! Ha! Good Luck!

Eddy is right Vinomadd,
first things first. First, buy a set of good quality basic tools. There are certain tools you cannot carve without. Rick at Little Shavers or Smokey Mountain Carving supply can set you up with a good starter set. Rick will make sure they are sharp when you get them.

Then you need a little instruction from someone who can show you how each tool is used. The biggest thing is learning to use your tools. Once you do that, you can tackle any project you want plus you will have a better idea of what type of tool you will need for this project. Try to locate a carving group in your area or some classes going in within driving distance. You will be glad you did.
Welcome and good luck.
