Default This carving thing is addicting

Once you start this, you just crave information. Tools?? Wood?? Technique??, I found a couple local carvers willing to help and answer my questions. I thought I was cool showing up with my nice shinning tools, and realized I was doing something wrong when I noticed it appeared like they where cutting through butter. So I started pushing harder, and that didn't work, I asked for help. Jay, the elder said may I try, and I handed him my tool. He looked at me and stated " what good is your expensive tools if you don't keep them sharp. He offered to take care of the for a couple bucks. I picked them up this morning. All I can say is WOW... WOW.... and did I mention WOW... All I want to do is cut things. This carving thing is addicting.Pheenix

Welcome Pheenix. Good to hear you're enjoying carving.

Now, go back to your sharpening friend and ask for some lessons ... even if you need to pay for them. ... and if he refuses payment, give something in kind.

Sharpening is a basic "gateway" skill. You'll need to sharpen those tools often, even if only a quick stroping to keep them keen. Having to depend on, or wait for, someone else slows you down.

Welcome Pheenix:
Bob Easton is right = better than new razor sharp is carving sharp and it is a skill to be learned. Some day, YOU may be the person others turn to for sharpening.
For me there's some weird "Zen" thing when I sharpen tools, my own or somebody else's.
Off I go, away I go, I'll be back when I sense the edge.
