Tom, Leave the base on the router. If you want a less finished look, go a little shallow, then go back with hand tools to give it the look you want. Use the router for bulk wood removal, like you would a table saw or a band saw, or a chainsaw. Wade |

Hi Tom, If I were you, I'd use chisels. A recent article in WC Illustrated gave a good lesson. Using rotary power tools, there's to much chance of going off the line,& ruining you project. You get much more control, using chisels. With white oak you may have to use a mallet, it's pretty hard, but very satisfying results. Read that article & practice, then tackle it with confidence.
