Question carving hair with veiner

question from a newbie. i asked a wood carver on line how he carved hair on his animal pieces. he told me he used a 3mm # 11 veiner. i found out on this site that it is a gouge. he told me he does a shaped stoke in both directions. i do not know what that means. anyone help me.

At first I thought it was me that gave you that confusing advice after I had too many beers but I don't ever use mm when I talk gouge sizes. I tell folks to make a series of "S" shapes much tighter and closer than you think and over lap the "S" shapes. This will give a beginner a good starting point.

I sometimes use a V tool, or a gouge then a V tool, or a gouge the a smaller gouge. Don's S shapes is also a great way to go. Try different ways and see what you like best.

I don't know what that means either. One thing I find helpful is to not start carving hair on any smooth place - first I make it randomly unsmooth, if that makes sense.

I am not sure what that is but I follow Gulfcoast procedure and it works fine.
