Default carving giant redwood

hi,
i will be trying to carve a ring out of redwood (small fallen piece from a giant sequoia).....Could anyone please offer some advice on how to go about it?
Hand tools or power?
Should I drill the hole first and then whittle away the outer side, until I reach the right thickness???
Is the wood too brittle or soft with which to craft a ring?

Many thanks in advance,
Sax.

drill the hole first....redwood will chip out doing detail but you really shouldn't have any problems just making it round.if you have a scrollsaw, cut the outter circle and then just very little carving, mostly sanding.

Sax, I got a chuckle Thinking about this tiny piece against the giant tree. Warning Some folks (me) have an alergy from redwood. Use a mask for safety if you make any dust.
Dave... looks like you have been making dust with yer knices...

How big a ring? For a finger?

You could maybe carve it from a branch core, pop it on a lathe first and carve to finish.
