I talked to a woodcarver in the phillippines who specializes in religious statues and asked him how he got such a lifelike details on his work.
He told me that when he started out he was allowed to do component work only. They would show him how to carve out a right ear and when he learned how to do a reasonable likeness , they allowed him to make another 10,000 right ears to be incorporated into statues bound for the vatican tourist shops. He then went on to the left ear then the nose then the scalp and so forth.
practice practice practice.

Thanks to everyone. I'm getting the message. In sales,we used to say you had to tell someone something 7 times before they remembered it. I received a new box of wood today and my 3rd piece ever is starting to look like a face.

I'm only a 2nd. year apprentice but the advice you've been given sounds about right.
My biggest fault was trying to beat the clock. Nothing wrong with hurrying, but not while carving. There is no race.
Keep at it.
