Default what do judges look for?

Hello everyone...
Hi am a noob to carving..I'm almost finished my first carving and I'm entering it the Canadian Woodcarving Championship in january... is,what do Judges look for in a carving?
I'm doing,i call it extreme relief.its 4in thick,i got the background down to 1/2in.It 's a carving of a goblin his tail has two loops and hangs over his head.most of the tail is off the back ground.theres a bone going threw the hat,11/2inches from the back ground....
my Buddy's come over and the first they say is "wheres the carving" i love it its so good.......
Oh and about my nick name.....SAFTY FIRST.....nope i didn't do it carving i did it taking a new set of small chisels out of the package...you know how some come dipped in rubber.....well one hand pushed the other did a jerk and wham i got stung...ouch its healing good now.... thanks tony

Welcome Tony. Sorry you didn't get the reception you might have expected, but sometimes things start out that way. When you say you are a newcomer in one breath and then talk about entering a National Championship in the next, folks get the impression that you might be overestimating your own skills or underestimating the competition, thus the craft itself.

Perhaps this will put it in perspective: A new carver came to a carving class one day to register. The instructor asked if he wanted to sign up for the one week or the two week class. The newbie said: "I want to become a Master Carver, do I really need the two week one?".

Welcome and enjoy. Just take you time.

Bob
