Question How Can I Do This Without It Showing

Hi Gang ( Still A Newbie )

Please see attachment.

I'm carving a Penguin with Cane & Top Hat ~ Hopefully !

Need your imput guys/gals.

I want to attach the penguins fins/arms to his/her body.
Just dont have the talent like you guys/gals out there in carving land YET

Finally My Question(s)

1. What do I use to attach the fins without leaving a trace of where the bonding had taken place

2. I'm doing to paint the penguin of course and hopefully the paint with just wash over the joint area without any seam of markings of where both pieces came together.

I was thinking of get the basswood dust and mixing it up with some capenteners glue. Think that would HIDE the jointing area ?

Need help in this one please. Any and all ideas will be GREATLY APPRECIATED

You want to cut slots into the body and shave down the end of the wings to insert them into the slots. This is a delicate process. After you match them up as well as you can you can fill in the area where the two parts intersect with some plastic wood or Bondo body filler.

Question Re: How Can I Do This Without It Showing

Hi TreeWizard

First of all " " for you help.

Humm! I thought somewhere I read something about bondo & plastic wood.
The question is:

Will the jointing of the two fins show after I paint the penguin ?

Thanks again

I don't think it would show if you used an opaque paint. Not sure about a wash though. It wouldn't take long to make a little trial piece as neatness wouldn't be a major factor. Just my 2 cents worth.

It's going to be pretty hard to do what you want without the join showing. Ideally, what you should have done was to carve the penguins body, leaving the area where the fins will join flat. Then you could have glued on the uncarved fins and then carved them to match and tie into the body. You could probably still do this by scrapping the fins you have and making some new ones. Make sure you use carpenters glue to attach them.

I have a friend who carves birds of the quality that he has won best in show awards several times. He attaches the wings and feather groups as I suggested. Will the joint show, well think of a well done body repair on your car. When bondo is applied and correctly sanded then painted you can't tell where the repair begins or ends.

Smile Just Another Question About Attaching Wood

Hi Lynn O. Doughty & Fellow Carvers

Pertaining to the joinning of those dore fins on my penguin.

Of course I'd run a few Test Pieces First.

Here's what I'm going to try (Thanks To You Guys/Gals.

I'll dry fit some pieces of basswood I got laying around and do a fast couple of cuts; like fins & body. I glue 'em with Elmer's Carpenter Glue let it dry then hit the joinning area with Bondo.

Let that dry and sand & smooth area. Paint and see if the joinning shows.
WHEW Tell me what you all THINK.

O.K. gang that's it. More to come film @ 11 . . .
