Hi! I am new to this site. I live in London, UK, and I have no idea where I can buy basswood or another suitable wood for a beginner learning to carve (either online or in a shop)? Many thanks for any suggestions! Alisoun

Hi Alisoun, I don't know where you can buy it, but it'll probably help if you look for the UK version of Basswood, which is Lime. Mark |

Hi Alisoun. I get mine from here, Timber - Ockenden Timber and as Mark says, it's Lime you want to look for.

Alisounprobert, You have the original Basswood there in the UK... It's called Lindenwood (Lime wood) known by its Scientific name - Tilia Europaea and Tilia Cordata... Tilia Carolina and Tilia Americana were introduced through out Europe... Go to forrest groves full of tilia! Research it, you should be okay from there! Its very unique shaped leaf and flower give it away... Familiarize your self with it. Sincerely, Rob Vega (Lazy C.)

If you are just after a few small blocks to start off you can get some from HOBBYCRAFT. They sell a bag of 6 to 8 blocks assorted widths but usually 4" high. Costs around Ł10. Theres a section in the shop where they sell wood for making bits for model railways or doll houses and thats where the bog of assorted carving blocks is. Ive been looking for somewhere else to buy different sizes too so if you have any luck please let us know |
