I have been all over the net looking for some easy to understand and fun Beginner patterns. I did copy on little shaver's site the santa with the long hat..... not much detail but looks like it may be a good place to start. I did work on a chip carving pattern this weekend... but as I said earlier, I need to get a skew... I believe it was called. I know there is alot to learn.... and getting hands on is the best way. I bought learners block of faces..... so as you can see, Im playing.... so much to experiment with and I guess I need to slowwwwwwwwwwwwww down a bit... This has been a life long dream to be carving... I have done stained glass for many years and many many crafts... but this is awesome.... so excited.... Thanks for the warm welcome... if you have any easy patterns ~for beginners ~ you can email them to coppertopf2002@yahoo.com ~ Greatly appreciated. Hope you all have a wonderful day ~ MaggieMae1959 |

Maggie Mae, welcome to the addictive world of woodcarving. A suggestion, you may want to pick up a book on basic relief carving. I have often looked at stained glass patterns and thought that they would be a good basis for relief carving. This would be something familiar to you. A few of these and you will get a feel for the tools and be ready to go into the round.

Lora S. Irish (Irish when she posts on the board) has an extensive carving pattern site at www.carvingpatterns.com She's got free patterns, free tutorials, and more...that's where I learned a lot of what I know about relief carving. Bob Duncan Wood Carving Illustrated |

If you are wanting to start with chip carving ...get Wayne Bartons book "Chipcarving, techniques and patterns" and do exactly as he says, even if it seems awkward.......it works. Thats how I started, then it grew from there....and grew and grew and grew LOL
