I live in North-west New Jersey. We used to have a woodworkers warehouse that carried blocks of basswood. You can tell its been a while since I last carved. (the kids are 1 and 3 now) Anyway, the web search has'nt gone so well. Question is does everyone just suck it up and pay shipping? Are some better than others? Thanks in advance.

Scott, Just a suggestion... There's a fairly large carving club somewhat near to you. Try contacting them to see if they know of a local supplier: North Jersey Wood Carvers 296 Bloomfield Ave. Bloomfield, NJ President: Jerry Cetrulo email: amcarve@americanwoodcarving.com In our neck of the woods, when there's a carving show, the carving suppliers are there, too. I try to stock up on tools and wood there. You might check out the carving shows in your area. Donna T

Howdy. I concur about heinecke. Have bought from them before. Wood is nice and so are the people. Haven't seen the prices beat yet either. ![]() http://www.heineckewood.com/ Good luck. Kel |

Hi Scott Welcome to forum. In case you're looking for something other than basswood, here's a link to Groff & Groff Lumber that I learned about from Goody AKA Decoycarve. I have ordered some poplar blocks and got good results. Also ordered some butternut from Dale at Heinecke Wood--good results also. BTW--I live in Edison, N.J. http://www.groffslumber.com/Price_Li...domestics.html

Try looking for a local lumber mill in your area. I have one here where I buy my basswood. I recently got a chunk that was 4" thick by 8" wide and 18" long for $10. And no shipping either as I drive past the place 5 mornings a week! Good wood although it's unsanded.
