Roy, back to the ball in cage. I do them all the time and you can do it. Don't get in a rush and keep taking the inside down forming the ball. Keep turning it and working on making the ball round. As you get further down along the sides allow the sharp point of the knife to keep cutting the wood out. You can not pry the wood out, you will break the rails every time. The ball will not fall out if you keep doing it evenly. You would think it would but it will not. Hope this helps Benjamin

Just a thought here. The aspect of safety hasn't been discussed. I personally have had accidents while working on small projects such as this. I'm just going take this opportunity to stress compliance with safety rules and equipment.. hand and thumb protection should be mandatory for all projects like these.
