Default a box!

Alright, I've taken measurements, researched what kind of wood I'd need to start, and hit my first road block: how do I go about making a box? I've been looking around for some tutorials and such, but no luck for me! I'm interested in making a 4'x7.25'x1.25' box. One half of the box will need a deeper excavation than the other side. For those interested in this project for any reason, it's the only other topic created by me.

If someone wants to give me a walkthrough, I'd appreciate it, though I'll take any help anyone will offer. Thanks!

You would think that something as simple as a box would only have one or two possible solutions. But, there is almost an infinite number of ways to build one. What type of corner joints, how to secure the bottom, what type of cover/lid, glue, nails, screws and on and on. I'd suggest you try the library. Possibly scroll saw magazines and books as they have box articles on occassion. Don't foget woodworking magazines/books. Like to be more help, but it's an almost endless subject. Just find something you like and copy it is probably the easiest way.

their is a site on the web for building a box! I had it on my favorites for awhile was going to read it and see what alternatives they had but didn't get around to it, and it seems when I moved I have lost the site? Give it a google search, bet you come up with it....if not, try www.justwoodworking.com several of the guys there have a whole list of sites for plans ...Handymanclub of America forum is the same..someone on there has everything! But on second thought, think you have to be a member to get on there.

There is a book called something like 'Making Small Decorative Boxes'. Â*I have no idea who published it. Â*I saw it at Bookamillion. Â*A search of Amazon, B&N or BAM could probably find it.

Hello David,
Mate, take a look at www.gifkins.com.au . Roger is a box maker par excelence! he has written a couple of texts on the subject and in those texts he gives the secrets of his sucess in making prize-winning boxes. From memory there are some tips on how to make boxes on the site also.
There is also a book called 'Celebrating Boxes' that features some inspiring work and a word or 2 of wisdom, eg.
'What do you give a person who has evrything? A box to put it in!'
from Down Under,
Dennis
