The National Audubon Society puts out two excellent tree identification books. Field Guide to North American Trees (eastern and western regions) They sell for around 20 bucks apiece. They are the best I have seen anywhere. Size wise about 7 1/2' x 4 1/4' by about 1 1/4' thick. They are not quite what you'd call pocket size but are still easy to carry with you in the field. They have good descriptions of the trees, parts, habitat and area of growth. In the front are full color plates of leaves, trunks, and flowers, all cross referenced to the Species Description section.

Hi,
Thanks are you reffering to the book that is over 900 pages? It is at amazon. Is it the book called, 'Field Guide to North American Trees, by Thomas S. Elias'? For some reason amazon doesn't sell it anymore, and they don't show a picture of it.... For $20 though a 900 page book would be perfect. Thanks for your help

I don't think you'll find Elias' book for 20 bucks. Â*This is the 'Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Trees', published by Alfred E. Knopf in trhe US and Random House in Canada. Â*I believe it is written by Elbert E. Little, former Chief Endrologist for the USFS. Â*It's about 714 pages including the 630 color plates (about 6 per page), and the informational text, glossary and index.

Audubon puts out a series of about 20 Field Guides ranging from the Night Sky to Spiders, to Fish, to Rocks and Minerals, etc. Â*Good reference material, and what is nice is they are all the same convienient size so they organize well on the shelf and pack easily for field work.

No, I'm not a shill for the Audubon Society (in fact I'm at odds with a lot of their policies) but they put out the most excellent reference material for the non professional that I have seen anywhere!

Better add that I'm in full agreement with most of their positions!
