Default Books on Carving Wood spirits.

Hi,
I was wondering what a good book on carving woodspirits would be? I want to carve them in cottonwood bark, but I don't know where to get it? That oliver guy said they aren't looking for new customers. I want to get two books. 1 on carving a small woodspirit on normal wood, and another on carving cottonwood tree bark. Can use ya help again. Thanks!

I'll do you one better, it's free! http://www.woodcarvingpatterns.com

Laura Irish gives one of hte better instructions I've seen for the wood spirit. There are also free tutorials for relief and other styles of carvings there. A great deal for the beginner. Check it out and enjoy.Whittler

Yep, Lara Irish's site is a good resource.
Two books and there are a least a dozen more Smile , that I would suggest are , "The Woodcarvers Guide, How to Carve a Woodspirit in a hiking stick" by Sklar Johnson, ISBN 0-9753002-0-2, it's a small book , pocket book size and just 46 pages, not sure wether Fox Chapel carries it or not and the other book is "How to Carve Faces in Driftwood" by Harold Enlow,ISBN 1-882475-01-1. Ah the master himself. Smile
This one can be a used as a guide for bark carving , how do I know, well Harold carved a piece of bark for me, what a beauty, actually a double beauty cuz I won the bark in a free draw from Alex Bisso and then Harold carved it for me, what a treasure. Happy
I'm sure without going and checking that Fox Chapel carries a number of other books on Spirit Carving that will serve you as well.

OG.

Besides the two that OG posted, there are more.

Illustrated Guide to Carving Tree Bark - Jensen
Woodspirits & Walking sticks - Wolfe (plus a video of the same)
Bark Carving - Buchanan
Cottonwood Bark Carving - Jansen
Bark Carving II - Jansen

Allen Goodman is in the process of making a video on carving a woodspirit face. It should be available soon. You can see his style in the walking stick thread.

By the way, BC - how is the confederate soldier coming?

bcarvings,
My vote goes to "carving in driftwood" by Mr. Enlow. That was my first how to carve book (20+ yeas ago), and still the best ever. The book applies to Bark very much and I will be sending a suitable piece of bark soon.
I am catching up on my orders now, since xmas is over. I'll be back in business real soon.
You can call me art... my last name is Olver (no "i" there). Trust me.....choose Harold Enlow!!!

Skylar Johnson has a pretty good VHS called "Carving Woodspirits in Cottonwood Bark." His Website is www.mountainwoodcarvers.com.

Hi,
What would be the best book on how to show me to make eyes, hair, and the nose using minimal tools? I think I should buy the book Carving a woodspirit in a hiking stick? Anyone know how many tools it requires of you?

Also I stopped carving my confederate soldier because it required over 7 palm tools, and the book doesn't even tell you the size. If anyone can make a list of the exact tools I need, I would really appreciate it. The head looks good so far. I'd have to say even though it's not finished it looks good.

And does anyone have the book carving pen figures? If you did I have a very specific question about making the eyes. Also on the santa is the head sapposed to be round? The book only shows you carving the front, and not the back....

Thanks again! Bcarvings

Skylar Johnson's book on carving a woodspirit in a hiking stick calls for 4 tools, a carving knife, 1/4" "V" tool, 1/4" & 1/8" gouge as well as a kevlar carving glove. Jester
With some practice a knife could be the only tool needed.

Ya missed a couple links Dave.
http://www.carvingpatterns.com/wooda...woodspirit.htm
http://www.arbortech.com.au/articles/039/039a.html

and your WWWoodcarvers link should be
http://carverscompanion.com/Ezine/Vo...Wispinski.html

As for books I like the ones by Wolfe and Enlow mentioned in earlier posts.
