Default book suggestion for face carvings

I want to take advantage of the current sale on foxchapel books. I want to eventually learn to carve the human form. There are a couple f books offered, one by Whillock sp? and one by Jeff Phares. Which do you thing may be most beneficial to a new carver?
Right now I'm carving woodspirits learning to carve the nose and eyes etc. in hopes of progressing to more realistic carving.{ I've a long way to go!} If any of you are familiar with either of these authors or books which you do feel offers the best instruction?
thanks

I don't know about the two books you listed. The book that I realy like for faces is " Caricature Heads in Wood and on Paper" by Marv Kaisersatt. The book takes you thur step by step to carve a face and the reason you do this cut.

I have one of Jeff Phares books and I find it to be a good reference. Check out the Mark Gargac's site as well...his CDs and DVDs are quite good. Also, go to the tutorial section here and you'll see some of his tutorials as well as some other helpful ones that covers the subject of faces. Good luck.

my 2 cents...there are alot of carving books for faces. some are good, and some not so good. caricature faces...pete leclair, dave stetson, marv kaisersatt, and harold enlow books have been good for me. realistic faces...jeff phares, john burke books come to my mind. dave maggard has a dvd for carving faces that is as good as any i have seen. i have about every carving book printed regarding faces, and there is something to be gained from each, but, none of them will automatically make your carved faces magically better. books by burne hogarth and jack hamm are good for anatomy in my opinion. PRACTICE is the only thing that will help you improve. read some anatomy books, stare at people, read some carving bookss, and carve, carve, carve...
