Question Beyond beginner help

Okay, I am hoping someone can help me. My hunnie has been wanting to get started in carving for a while, and I'd like to get him some beginner tools and books/dvds for his birthday. He has done zero carving, and I am clueless. I am unsure what 'style' of carving to get him started with, and what tools to start him with.

His aspiration is to someday get good enough to carve large, human size asian warrior statues to guard his karate school, and things like fu dogs, dragons, etc... which I think would be basic palm carving, perhaps using a dremel type tool as well as hand tools, and moving to a larger scale as he progresses, right? But he has also mentioned how he'd like to carve a bamboo releif headboard for a bed (which goes more to the chip carving, right?)

I have found one or two hobby stores that seem to be knowledgeable enough for me to go and talk to, but they are quite a drive, and I'd like to have somewhat of a clue what I am after before I go there. Plus I'd like to know some about prices and quality of tools so I don't get screwed or buy something way too cheaply made.

So can anyone tell me where to start? What do I need to know? What do I need to buy? What is the minimum to buy for someone just starting? And is there any particular books or teaching videos that are great?

Sorry for not knowing more, but can you please help me?
