I'm making a deep ladle out of walnut. I need to purchase some sort of gouge that will be good for removing a lot of waste. Do you go for a flatter gouge? The bent gouge I'm using makes only about 1/4" groove, which will take me forever. Any ideas? Thanks! |

Look for a good spoon gouge. Something from Pfeil with a good deep reach. I have a Denny spoon gouge that works well for fairly deep spoons, but might not work well enough for a deep ladle since it isn't very long.

Is the ladle you are carving fairly large and where/what is the waste? You may want to get more than one gouge if the waste is the inside of the ladle and along the sides of the handle. If you have access to a band saw, you may want to use that to remove waste from around the handle. I like to use a mallet gouge abouit 1 to 1/4 inch with a fairly flat curve to get rid of large amounts of waste.

Thanks for the responses! The ladle is the size of a soup ladle, about 3" diameter, a couple inches deep. I'm working the the actual scoop of the ladle now using a mallet with a pretty small gouge. I thought my next tool should be something I can use to remove waste more effectively. I'll look online and nearby Rockler store for the suggested tools. Appreciate the input!

the denny gouge is a #9 i think and its 5/8 wide-- and its bent-- pfeil has several bent gouges-- id try to make the dipper wider than it is deep-- will make it much easier to clean out the center. the wider you can make this , easier it will be to make the btm smooth- i think- having never done one im currently working on a coffee scoop-- cause thats what my brother asked for-- next ill go onto a dipper-- right now he's using a gourd- for his civil war reenactments

Are you mainly wanting to use a gouge or flexible on the tool choice? If you could be somewhat flexible, then a Kutzall burr in a Foredom tool works wonders on waste wood. You can then finish up with a gouge of your choice.

I used a 20mm bent gouge to hollow out the back of a mask, it would work well for your application.

I have a Pfeil #9 35mm for hogging out alot of wood in a hurry. But I'd suggest a spoon gouge or bent gouge for getting down into the bowl of your ladle. Good luck - show us how it comes out! Mark |
