Default The Berserker Mk 1

Here's the Berserker carving (otherwise known as high quality firewood!) I was planning on making.

From this image:

Well, it didn't go quite to plan - I have plans to use Genes tutorial here -
"Carving A Simple Small Figure From A Block Of Wood '' A Beginners Tutorial - to try again, I really don't think this ons is up to scratch. Then again, it's my first attempt at a figure so there's plenty of scope for improvement!

It might not be what you wanted it to be, but it is still pretty cool! Don't burn it up, keep it, and make him stand guard over your carving tools! I'm in the same boat... I thought my first project was going to end up looking like a pretzel rod... it doesn't matter as long as your having fun!

I think you just need to keep working on him. It is a good start. And even if you whittle him down till he is a toothpick, you will be learning what works.

Thumbs up Re: The Berserker Mk 1

You think thats bad! that is good compared to my first figure. I did like a hobo with a tin cup sitting and he leg looked like it was growing out of his kidney. All you have to do is set that one on a shelf and in a few weeks of more practice compare it to the new ones.

He would make a great knight in a chess set. Keep this one for comparison in several years. That way you will see just how far you have come.

Grim, The third photo, shows quite nice detail on the nose and face. I think it can be a really nice carving, with a wee bit more detail such as shown in the third photo. Thanks for showing us!

Grim:

As one who is also interested in Scandinavian carving, I'd say you've got an excellent start there. You just need to finish it. The proportions are good. The face is good. Hey, if you can do the braid in the back (and obviously you can since you did!), you can finish this sucker. Not to worry. It'll be great.

Keep working on this one! Look at the pic and you will see that you need to make the head smaller and carve the shield down and in more as well as making the arms deeper so they can be more rounded.

You simply have to remove more wood to get to the berserker hidden inside.

If you're looking for advice...mine is to not stop! You've got it roughed out now comes the fun part........detailing. My hardest part of carving is getting where you're at - the rough out. If you go on I would bet you'll be happy with the results.
