| | Beginning project for basswood I have a block of basswood that's 4.25 X 4 X 6in. For the life of me I can't figure out what I can make from this. Any ideas?
The proportions don't seem to be right for a figurine, so I am thinking of cutting it to a smaller size. What size would you recommend? Thanks |

A good beginning project could be a snowman. You would only need a few paints and very little detail.
HappY carving

| | Re: Beginning project for basswood Those are good dimensions for a simple project that you can take as far as you like. Carve an egg! Then decorate it! Chip carve or relief carve it, to your hearts content. A great exercise in learning skills with your tools.

| | Re: Beginning project for basswood 4 1/2x4x6? check Lynn Doughty's Blog Site for carving those cowboy boots! The blank he suggests is 4 1/2" high, so no matter which way the grain runs on your basswood block, you should be able to cut at LEAST two sets to work on. Scale 'ewm up or down to fit. Plus he has posted an excellent tutorial on carving the set. http://www.outwestwoodcarving.blogspot.com/
Lynn, hope you don't mind me posting your blog's link
Add to that, there are numerous blanks available for boots of various kinds, designed as starter projects.......a great choice!
