Default beginner pocket knife questions

Well i have been browsing around this forum for a week or so now, and i want to start woodworking. i do not have a lot of money right now and right now i just want to start off with whittling. I have read about the double cross from Rick and want to know what kind of modifications he makes to the knife to make it better for carving, can those type of modifications be made to another pocket knife to make them better to whittle? are the modifications necessary for very basic beginner stuff?

Cledan, First off how much are you planning on spending on a pocket knife. You can get a good one for anywhere from $10 to $250. Rick's is a good one and will run you about $60 as I remember. Might be off a bit. His modifications are specific to that particular knife so would be done differently on another brand.

I started out with a three blade "Buck" folder right off the shelf from Walmart. It was about $20. If it will shave the hair on your arm keep it stropped and it will work to get you going. Strop the blade(s) often. Good luck!!!

Cledan,
I had a Buck knife that I broke the tip off of about 20 years ago, came across it a month or so ago in a box. I sent it off to Rick, he reshaped the blade and sharpened it up real nice, total charge $4.00, can't beat that. So if you have an old well made knife send it off to Rick, couple bucks and your on your way to carving. Best of luck!

Dave

Careful! Not just any knife. There are plenty of folders out there that will not make good carving knives, for one reason or another.

Why don't you pm me your address and I'll send you one of mine. All sharpened and ready to go. Will have been used a bit, but that's a good thing. I've got way more than I'll ever need, so no worry there.

All that's assuming you live in the U.S. of A. If not someplace where it's legal to mail "used camping equipment."

Sorry, I should have said a quality knife like the Buck knife mentioned in the post. Smile

Not to worry. I've got his snail mail and will ship him off one of mine tomorrow or the next day.

lol, looks like you started something Ed.

Only suggestion I have is to make sure the blade locks. I love my Swiss Army knife but the blade doesn't lock and it is downright dangerous to carve with.
