Hey everyone! I am a scroller who wants to get into carving also... I'm sure this has probably been covered here at some point, but was wondering what would be the base tools needed to get started with trying to do nice carvings? are there any carving sets with everything needed or are the knives and so forth purchased individually... Thanks for your help! stoxxcha

The most common response is to purchase the starters set at Little Shavers. By all accounts it is a great price on good tools. They come pre-sharpened and the kit includes a carving glove. Remember to always wear the glove! Good luck! Dan |

The only well set up beginner set that I have seen anywhere is the one Rick makes at Little Shavers, everything you need and nothing you don't all sharpened ready to go. Carl

I just got mine the other day, and it is fantastic!!! Very sharp, resonably priced, and they are extremly nice people. You won't regret the purchase.

The answer really depends on exactly what type of carvings you would want to attempt. Different tools are used to do hand held carvings, larger in-the-rounds or relief carvings. The first basic tool i would always recomend is a really good carvers knife. To be followed by a 12-16mm#5, then a 60 degree v-tool then flesh out your options by buying individual tools, one or two at a time. While I agree that little shavers starter kit is excellent especially the glove thumb gaurd, strop and compound and a great price I might add, it may be more efficient to buy intermediate or full size chisels if planning on eventually carving reliefs and larger carvings. larger tools can also be used on smaller carvings. smaller palm-sized tools will sometimes frustrate someone trying to do a larger carving.

i only wish someone had steered me to intermediate tools in the begining-Head Bange- i have a large asst but am replacing my daily use tools with the mid size. i can use with my hand and also some mallet work---- i bought mallet tools and palm tools -- the mallet tools are simply to large to be used by hand and the plam tools with special exceptions are going by the wayside for me. tho to begin--ricks beginner set is THE WAY TO GO. Cheers
