Wood carving has been around for a long time. Long before the advent of electricity. There are many methods of getting the block of wood to the sizes you want. If you cut it to lenght first, which you can do with the coping saw, your knife or other tools can do the rest. Takes some time, but is (at least to me) an enjoyable process. Nothing like the sound an feel of a sharp tool cutting wood. If you should decide to purchase a bandsaw, think big. the bigger the better.
