Thank's Ellwood.. I guess it is safe to say then that your 3mm set is a good one for small and larger figures. I think I will order the 3mm then. I have the micro Helvie knives and they are good too but I really need a small v-gouge and scoop.. Am I right in assuming that the 3mm is smaller than the 5mm? See how dumb I am with tools..lol Thanks a lot and I am looking forward to seeing more of your chess set.. you are off to a good start! Charlotte

Correct!
1.5mm is aproximately 1/16"
3.0mm "-------------" 1/8"
5.0mm "-------------" 3/16" ect.
Here's a conversion table.

I was wanting a set of the dockyards and got the catalogs down to see who had what. Well, shoot... I had to put that idea back on the shelf, as there were three different sizes of dockyards.. Now Thomp says he has 1.5-5mm and Elwood says he has 3mm .. so what would you suggest that I get? I am thinking more for facial features and small animals .. for their facial features etc.. Thanks , Charlotte
Charlotte,
i cant speek with the experiance of using all 3 sets, but, when condemplating the purchase, i thought my set would provide the best selectin of what was offered at the time... except it didnt come with a mini v tool so i bought 2 of rambelsons palm smallest v tool to aid my set..

the Dockyard Micro Sculpture Set
Contains: 4mm U Gouge, 3mm U Gouge, 2mm U Gouge, 2mm V Tool, 2mm Chisel.

my set only has u gouges.

Dockyard Micro Gouge Set
Contains: 5mm U Gouge, 4mm U Gouge, 3mm U Gouge, 2mm U Gouge, 1.5mm U Gouge.

Dockyard Micro Knife Set
Contains: Sheeps Foot, Angle Foot and Hook Blades

I got my dockyards from
little shavers.. http://www.littleshavers.com/Dockyard.html

dockyard Micro-U-Gouge Set

i have seen two other sets elsewhere on the web, one of them has a couple gouges that are duplicates of this set and several micro knives, the other set has a v tool but i think all the sets are comparable in price while still considered micro-or mini tools.

here is one site that has all 3 sets . a little higher in price than rick.. http://www.texaswoodcarvers.com/Tool...d.htm#Dockyard

i have kept my tools sharp on a leather wheel with flexcut gold compound the, wheel i made out of 25 - 1/8" layers of leather 3" disks, i haven't used them enough to have to take them to a stone yet, and hope i never will, as that scares me with gouges still,,, ill probably send them back to rick ferry to get them reshaped when needed,, $2.00 +sh ain't a bad price for me to keep my sanity..

Thomas, I was looking at the Flex-Cut Mini Palm set.. That looks like what I would like as it also has the 3mm v tool... I have bought two of flex-cut sets and really love them.. One is the large set and then one is the medium set..The handles fit well in my hand..Now that I have the bucket box, I could line them right up...lol Don't you think that would be a good mini set? Does Rick have this set..??? Thanks for all the comparisons... I have wanted a dockyard set, but this mini flex cut looks good too.. Charlotte

hummm, charlotte i couldn't tell you bout the flex cut mni's looks really flexible to flimsy to me.. couldn't advise... but if you like the handles you wont like dockyard

ricks got single flex cut tools 3mm to 22mm with or without handles $10.50-$18.00.
http://www.littleshavers.com/CatalogPage30.html

the dockyard mini tools look as if they were made of piano wire, my 4mm shank is as big as a 16 penny nail shoved into a pencil... no weight at all... and no size to all as well, but new handles could be made to accommodate the lack of size, I know with my hands some days i have trouble holding a smoke or pencil, and drop them often because i cant keep my hands closed always.

Maybe I should check Rick's and order a flexcut 3mm v tool.. and the another small u shape gouge to see if I like them before I order a set..A couple of my fingers lock on small tools ..etc. and I also drop things a lot because of the numb thing in my fingers so the flexcut is a good handle for my hands.. Thanks , I will check out Rick's site again.. sure appreciate the help! Charlotte

Hi, sorry I'm coming into this so late, but just wanted to tell you what a great job this is! Especially considering how small and detailed he is. Really, really nice!

Better late than never, eh? And you're right, that little not-much-bigger-than-a-penny character is well done.

Elwood, I don't think you have a cold. What you're feeling is severe eye-strain!

Nope, I'm a full blown category five snoT nose. I started working on a Knight today (elephant)....Three times so far. I get a little closer each time, Let me see ...if I do that for every piece I will have...64 attempts and 32 actual pieces......how many carvings do you have to do before you graduate from beginner to fledgling carver.
Thank you for your comments I appreciate the replies.
