What are back bent blades used for ?

Working convex surfaces or radiused edges, for starters.

Exactly. They need to come close to the width and arc you're carving, so it helps to have a couple of sizes. Woodcraft was closing out some of their carving gouges and I picked up a couple of back-bent gouges from them. You won't use them everyday, but when you need them, nothing else comes close to doing what they do. Mike

Thank you Mike, I am actually heading to my local Woodcraft store tomorrow they are having a tent sale and 10 % off everything in the store, hopefully they have some left.
