| | Re: Ax handle I had almost given up any hope of finding this drawing of a handle that I carved for a fellow several years ago. Maybe it will help with a few ideas. I'll try this week to find the guy and maybe get a photo of the finished handle.

| | Re: Ax handle Smokey,
That handle is as nice as it gets. Is the diagram at the left bottom a hole?
Thank you

| | Re: Ax handle Very nice, Smokey! I like the way the line flows on the inside edge line of the handle ... you made an excellent transition from the blade into the shaft then into the hand hole. Well done!

| | Re: Ax handle My beast as it has been called, is still in the same state of progress. I have taken my own advise, and have cut out a full size blank of just the dragon head end of ax handle in banake. I can get it local ( 1/2 block from the house is a company that makes hardwood flooring, custom moulding, and Ax handles),I get some small scraps for free ( not scrapes for me ), by larger cut offs they have cheap, and just about anything by the board foot. They just don't stock basswood. They are going to try and keep a small supply of tupolo gum on hand for the bird carvers in the area. Next closest suppler in 40 min away, which is not bad. I can work out my inlays on this, never done any inlay before. I guess it could end up being a cane top. Then I will have to make a proper cane for it. This head end can be carried to work, and worked on during my lunch break.
Banake( may not be spelled right, I have several chunks of wood from Bill I cann't spell the name of, or cann't prononce 30 mins latter) comes from S America, fine tight grain, very light, and does not fuzz up like basswood. And I can buy it for around 2.00 a board foot, no shipping, and pick out my own boards.
I will post some pics of some of my birds and other items this weekend, I hope. |

| | Re: Ax handle Alfredo--I finally chased down the guy that has the ax handle that I carved several years ago. He is an active thesbian and takes part in medievel reinactments. He also has the prototype ax head that I made of cherry which the blacksmith used as a pattern. The handle is approx. 20" tall x 2 1/2" wide, it is made of hickory, the prototype head is made if wild black cherry.
