Has anyone tried to carve avacado seed. I have a large seed and I have plans for it if it will work. My wife says that they have arsnic in them so she says I shouldn't try it. Hal

Apparently avocado seeds do contain a trace amount of arsenic, but handling them should not cause you any problems unless you are allergic. Good idea on trying to carve one since they are already head shaped. Let us know how it comes out.

Thanks David years ago I shaped ball of drywall mud into contrasting faces (one was round and puggy the other was hollow and thin) I want to do the same with the seed. I will try to post pics when I am done. Hal

I tried carving one once and it didn't work well. I didn't let it dry out i just cut it up. It was really easy to carve i put a face on it then it turned orange then grey/white and a few days later it tossed it because i was worried it was getting moldy/rotten and i only spent about 5 minutes carving it. If it works for you let us know how you did it.

Hi Hal, I found this forum while I was looking for avocado seed carvings. I have several large seeds and tried carving them wet. The problem is when they dry, the carving wrinkles. The seeds are now dry but I haven't carved them yet. One thing I noticed is the seeds don't have much grain. It's more like a sandy, powdery consistency. It ought to carve well.

OK; since we are on the subject, I was told long ago that avacados are the fruit of the ebony tree? I have grown several plants from seed, but it will be a long time before I carve any ebony. Well at least it makes a good story. Jim |

I tried carving the seed I had. I did not let it dry first. It had a very soft texture kind of like a potatoe but not as firm. As I was carving it started to turn orange. I wasn't happy with the way it was turning out so I threw it away. I think I like wood better. Hal
