Lightbulb Re: Artist Talent vs Carving Tool technique

I was down in Miami one time and they had an ART( in capital letters) show going on at the beach across from where I was getting unloaded. I wondered over there they had shipping containers that you walked by and looked into to see what the ARTIST had created.
some was real good some was HoHum but one really hit me as scarily ridiculus.
It was an old recliner that was worn out. The ARTIST said he found it on the curb on trash pickup day. He had taken a piece of worn out furniture did nothing to it but move to the site of the art show and that made it art because he said it was.
So is it art or smoke and mirrors? The emperor has no clothes?
In my thoughts artistic talent and technique go hand in hand.
Some one with talent but poor technique will create poor quality work.
Remember wood carving is one of those lost skills that nearly everyone did 150 years ago. People carved their own spoons so they could eat. only the rich could afford cast metal spoons.
driving a wagon across the prairie you had to be able repair that wagon. building a house without nails you had to carve mortise and tenons and pegs.
just my thoughts

There is, indeed, a sucker born every minute. Who do you think gets put in charge of government art collections?

The old chair as art thing is just part of the increasing trend of lazy untalented people looking to make a fast buck. Sadly, those who actually have talent are ignored, or at best, sell their creative works for peanuts while the scammers get rich.

What is art? I wish I had a nickel for every time I've heard this question.

My $00.02 worth: Art is that which makes you see or feel differently about the subject portrayed.

Carving tool technique is art
We listen, we read, to learn. We talk, we write, to teach. We create art to please and enjoy.

I'm afraid that that person probably really thought he had made a work of art. I've grown up watching to many people be rewarded for intent rather than final out come or even effort.

I once turned in a critical thinking essay when I was in High School that I had done just a few minutes before turning it in. When I got it back graded I had not done much worse than a friend of mine who had spent alot of time on the project. I asked the teacher about it after class and she told me she had graded me on my effort!
For those who don't traslate political correctness well what she was saying was I was dumb so she didn't want to grade me on my actual work because it might make me feel bad about myself.

To many people trying to be pc is what causes "modern art".

Art = Talent + Technique + Vision

politically correct is just another b.s. term invented to control the thinking and actions of the masses! About time everyone said "stick the politically correct!"
