Where do you carve while waiting somewhere? Don't you get chips everywhere? Is there a trick to doing it without making a mess? I'd love to figure out how to carve at my desk when it's slow without having to bring a vacuum to work. And I don't think my Dr. would appreciate me making a mess while waiting for him, although it might get me in sooner to see him that way.

Great project! Will definitely give this one a try after everything else.

Rick - you the man!

Ya know, I had forgotten about Rick's cigar box. I've been using the wooden box that came with the starter set that I ordered from Rick at Little Shavers. I put the tools in a plastic bag, and keep another plastic bag to dump the wood chips in when I'm done carving. I lay the bag of tools on the table, chair, couch, or whatever I'm working near. I carve the chips right into the open box whether it be sitting on the table, chair, or even my lap. If i'm in a hurry, I'll leave the chips in the box and put every thing else back in. Otherwise, I'll dump the chips into the spare plastic bag since I save them for the fireplace--makes good kindling. The only thing is I don't carry all my tools with me in the box since they won't fit with the gloves and all. So, maybe a cigar box might just work.

Kelly,
Up until 2001, I used to carve on airplanes; which the flight attendants really enjoyed.

I use a cigar box to catch the chips.

Remember that any project that fits into a cigar box is rather small.

I "prepare" carvings for carving in waiting rooms.

They are nearly ready to finish, so I do not have to remove large chips.

That way the chips stay inside the box and may be dumped out later.
