Question am I on the right track here??

ok so this will be my first real attempt... i tried to do a rough cut of a turtle on my parents bandsaw not knowing how i should start what i should cut etc. just basically started cutting. im looking to create a simple life-like turtle out of 1 piece. just wondering if im on the right track or what I should have done differently. Thank for reading!

This is how I cut mine out.... oops....now I can't post with "copy and paste" from my picturetrail? If you go to my picturetrail site and look in the "Woodcarvings" folder ...you will see a number of pictures of my sea turtle, including the roughout blank.

I am glad I was of some help Hedhunter, looks like your going about it fine. When I make my turtles I carve them from cottonwood bark, I posted the link to the magazine (the one with the turtle project) on your other post someplace. Here is a PIC of one, it isn't realistic but more of a folk art carving. They are easy only required I think 4 tools and didn't take long, they sell fast to. I have had a lot of women buying them saying they are so cute and such

Hedhunter, it looks like your off to a good start. Do you have a reference picture you are working with? Keep a pencil with you and draw what you want onto the wood now(Eyes, mout, shell markings) then carve away.
