Default 5 minute wizard with a twist, in process.

This is a little project my wife decided I needed to make. It is a Witch based on the 5 minute Wizard. This is my first crack at a face without facial hair and I am not sure where I am going with this yet. I am just going where the knife takes me, if that makes sense. I hope you enjoy and your input is welcomed. Thanks for looking!

Buckskin--Looking good!!

Keep on keepin' on--you doing great. The best ones are the ones where ya let the knife do the "talkin" for ya!

BTW--what's the wood--pine, fir, spruce or what?

Thanks for posting--ya might be starting a trend here--women spirits or witches instead of men spirits!

Thanks for the vote of confidence!!

Buckskin, Great job! I stay so far away from trying to carve the female face, that even with a beard it'd be bad. You damn well got it the first time. As soon as I get through with this reply, I am going to give it another try. Are you familar with the painting THE SCREAM. That will probably be my result. Again, Buckskin, very nice indeed.

Don't I drive right through Mustang on my way to California, some where around where there's a sign that says Home of Garth Brooks???

Hey buckskin--I thought it looked familiar--good old eastern white pine--my favorite. Be patient with it and take your time. If you see the wood starting to "rip", stop and go the other way with the knife--or go crosswise to the grain. You're doing good. I know you're not done yet, but don't be afraid to round off the "corners" along the chin and the cheeks. Look at people's faces--especially older women in this case, you'll see some "edges" where the bones are "draped" with skin, but they're still rounded not cornered.

You gonna paint or stain or what? I like leaving pine natural and spray with 4-5 coats of clear lacquer. Makes the wood a little darker in color but it does some neat stuff with the grain. Sometimes, I'll also use highlights with acrylic paints--like on my teddy bear pins, paint the eyes, or add a spot of color here and there like a heart on the chest. It breaks it up enough and doesn't make it too complicated or a long drawn out project. I like to carve 'em, and be done with 'em.

I'll be watching for the final results--great pics by the way too.

Thank you Tom for your inspiration as well. Mustang is just south of Yukon, "home of Garth Brooks" on I-40.

"JC" I had planed on painting it. Lots of black, some gray, maybe some green. I love the color of clear stained pine myself. It can really set some things off. I like the rustic look of it.

I just got to thinking that if your carving a wicked witch.... PERFECT. In fact that is why I am trying this. She ain't got to be pretty to be effective.
