Default 5 min wizard, Boxing day escape

I finally managed to get out to my new 'workshop' (otherwise known as the back room, shared with the budgies and guinea pigs). My first attempt at a 5 minute wizard turned into an afternoon wizard

So here he is, my first wizard

And here you see my 'workbench' - an old pine computer desk which needs a complete rebuild, my partner didn't know what the dowells were for when she built it and couldn't be bothered with the glue!

But it's a desk, and it's what is on it that counts. The wood on there was my present from my in-laws, a £20 mixed bag of offcuts from Good Timber in the UK. Not bad, mostly Ash and Oak - the first wood I've had that wasn't found wood.

Grim:

I think you have a future as a flat-plane carver! That's really nice. I may have to borrow some ideas here.

Thanks folks I must admit I enjoy flat plane work. I've seen a tendancy in the UK to think of it as the poor relation to 'real' carving but it's what drew me to carving in the first place and I love getting the knives out and whittling away!

Hey Grim - NICE wizards! Love the pointy hat on the one, and the forked beard on t'other. Well done. Congrats on your new WCI sub as well. You'll enjoy.

Interesting about the styles of carving and how their viewed. I love it ALL myself. I can definitely see where some "serious" carvers might look down their noses at the "whittlers" and their funny little figures. I think this happens here in the US as well. Me - I just like it all.

Anyways - thanks for sharing the pics. I'll post some of mine soon too.

Cheers
ChuckT

Hey Grim! I just returned home from Christmas with my daughter and her family, just saw your posting. I think you're on your way. Carve a few more like you just did, then try some with different beards, hats, noses, etc. Then you'll want to experiment with various eye treatments. Great start, keep it up.
