Default 3M Bristle Discs

Hi I'm wanting to know if any of the carvers here use 3M Bristle Discs in their rotor tools or power carving units and what size do you use And what color?

Yep I have used them and think they are a very good product for various sanding. I don't know if I have a certain color that I use. Seems I use all of them for one thing or another. I do find I like ones that are a bigger diameter though. Allows me to get into deeper areas. I seem to use them as a follow up to the Guge Sanders that I use first. I get all of the above at the
The WoodCraft Shop - Online Store
Larry has all of them on hand and I am sure there are other places to get them also.

I've also tried them and I liked them as well. The ones I had were yellow but I don't know that it makes all that much difference.

Hi Deb,

I use them in the various grits white, yellow, blue, and brown. I use the small diameter wheels for my small carvings. Take a look at Santa Fe Jewelry Supply. They had the best prices I could find.

Tom, if one does not work, try putting two on at a time, may work better for you.

Tom, I think you have to use those bristle disks in a power unit, I think if you try that they may work better for you. (smile)

I use 3 of them on a mandrel and I prefer white for clean-up. I just give a carving a quick once over, following the flow of hair, and carving lines--pressing them down into cracks and crannies to clean well. If you use a more abrasive grit, it will sand the detail off your carving pretty darn quick (don't ask me how I know that....because I only seem to learn things the hard way!) I've used the more abrasive grit and it will sure smooth out a carving and get rid of those desirable or undesirable carving marks. I used to use 3M Scotchbrite to do clean-up to get those annoying little whiskers of wood and carving dust off the carving to get it ready for painting, but I believe I prefer the discs. And run your power carver on a low speed with them. Actually, I keep my little battery powered Dremel mini-mite loaded with the 3M discs and it works great.

And yes, I'd feel that way even if my husband hadn't retired after 30 years with 3M. I just like the quality of their products!
