Default 2nd attempt at carving

Well, I bought a flex cut knife & a set of tools from woodcraft.

Here is my 2nd attempt at carving anything. The 1st attempt was the 5 minute wizard.

For this one, I followed Gene's instruction, on the "simple santa ornament"

Thank you Gene for being such a great instructor, you make great videos.

Well, here it is.

Constructive criticism is greatly appreciated, as that is the only way I can improve, so please, if you see something I could of done differently, please speak up.

Thank you for looking.

It looks like you got the right tools and know how to use them. Your doing just fine , stay with it. Keep these Santas so you will be able to see your progress and improvement. Merle

Brian: That's a great carving for your second attempt! If I might offer a suggestion, a little bit more forehead showing, and make sure that the head will "fit" into the stocking cap. Photo 2 also has the sideburn sticking out a bit too far... I have a beard, and mine doesn't stick out that far... I carve a lot of these and paint them as Santa Claus. I usually end up having to trim the front of the stocking cap back so there is not a wide cap over the face... (photo 3).

I like the way you have a curl in the tip of the beard. You might consider also trying to put some "s curves" in the main part of the beard with your V tool instead of just straight lines.

Your painting is very good - nice and clean. On mine, I put a bit of well-watered-down burnt sienna on the cheeks and nose to give them a rosy highlight. Very well watered down, as I only want a highlight, not a rosy spot...

You're doing well...keep it up!

Claude

Nice carving Brian, nice carving indeed! Looks like you're a 'natural' at carving so be sure and keep us posted on your future endeavors. Have fun and continued safe carving!
