Some of my grandchildren are homeschooled and they have to have an art class. For the last few years they have decided they want to carve to satisfy this requirement. Finding projects for the 16 and 14 year old has not been an issue but this year my 10 year old grandson wanted to carve as well. We started off with soap and potatoes but he has graduated to basswood. So far he has carved a pumpkin and a small penguin that we made into a neckerchief slide. I now need to come up with some new projects for him and I'm looking for ideas. Any ideas will be appreciated.

I made some whistles a while back- made the square block whistle then whittled it into something- a fish and a thumb and something else I can't remember right now. Whatever you decide, try to stay away from too much end grain carving- that was frustarating for mine when they first tried. How about a few little flowers- drill holes in another block and call it a garden. Mom will love it. |

The five minute wizard is a good one, carved on a 3/4 by 3/4 by 4 inch stick of basswood. I helped a 9 year old with it a year or so ago. I did one alongside him, so he could see how to hold the stick, how to sketch the pattern, where to make the cut, etc. I'd make a cut or two, then wait for him to make some on his stick. Had to keep telling myself to make small thin shavings, as his hands weren't strong enough to do what I kept wanting to do. On his own, he decided to keep the beard end looking like a cylinder instead of coming to a point, as he wanted it to stand on his dresser. Claude |

Perhaps, consider letting the kid choose and design his own project.

You can do a search on Google for "Boys Life Slide of the month" and find all sorts of pages that have carving ideas for youngsters, I even downloaded some of the pages to use as ideas. If your still interested send me a private message and I can give you a link where to download PDF documents of many Boys Life Slides pages. I posted a link earlier but it said it had to be reviewed by a moderator. Dave S |
