| | Valentine Pins Thought that I'd put up a few Valentine pins that some of my students made in woodshop class this session. I have 5 groups of ten boys (OMG...does that equal 50 total!?!) each week so I decided to give them a "one class only" break from their other thematic projects to let them carve some nice Valentine pins for their mom's, family, girlfriends, or whom ever.
I had several copies of Cyndi Joslyn's WCI article "Contemporary Carved Hearts" (Spring 2006 issue) available as a guide for the kids reference as they created their own unique creations. I personally made several of the pins a year ago when the article first came out and they were very popular with those I gave them too so I decided that the carving project would make a nice class carving lesson.
The pictures are just a few of very many creations that resulted from their efforts. |

| | Re: Valentine Pins Hey Dave, your guys did a great job with the valentine pins. I really like the design and carving on the natural finish one (the big heart with the 2 smaller hearts as an arrow). Thanks for sharing the student work. Tom H |

| | Re: Valentine Pins Thank's for all the comments and you can bet that ALL of the 100+ students that come through my woodshop class each year will most certainly be exposed to a heavy dose of woodcarving. Even when we're working on normal woodshop projects they know that I expect them to "extend" it with a balanced dose of woodcarving and/or woodburning.
With such a large emphasis on carving I'm most proud to report that it's been well over 5 years since a student has required stitches from using a blade incorrectly. Above all else it is also my expectation that all carvers learn to use "control" cuts, wear kevlar gloves, either clamp the wood on the table, or use a bench hook, and learn to respect the tools. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
