Default Tri-Santa's & well, uh...turnips

Me oh my! All of the recent Christmas postings of santa's and ornaments has got me in the spirit so I just had to get in on the party. Also, I just received one HEAVY box of basswood last week that cost $25.00 alone for UPS to ship it to me from northern Wisconsin... so I think I'm getting back into the carvin' mood rather quickly.

Part of my basswood shipment was a bunch of 2" X 2" X 12" pieces so I cut one in half and decided to carve up some block-head type Christmas Santa's for presents. Thing is, once I got into it I noticed that my carving wasn't even using half of the 2 X 2 so all that unused basswood was just going to be "dead" weight after I finished. Now if this were any ordinary piece of "free" found wood then I wouldn't have a problem but this is expensive basswood which led to me cutting it into a triangular block on the bandsaw.

I thought that they turned out sorta neat for a nice overcast Saturday sitting by the wood heater. Nothing too fancy but they'll go a long way as presents for those who are always wanting my stuff. Now I've only gotta carve 3 or 4 more! The hats on the santa's are sorta flat and kinda reminds me of that little sexy flat purple hat that Monica Lewinsky was wearing in all those Bill Clinton re-runs that we saw a million times back in the 90's

Anyhow, I suppose this is my Christmas contribution to the board.

A little bit off topic but inbetween carving I got out into the garden and pulled up about 15 big ole turnips that should last me a couple of weeks, then I'll go get some more. Gosh I've always loved turnips! I just cook them at high heat in the microwave for 4 to 8 minutes, depending on the size then wrap them in aluminum foil to sit and finish simmering the next hour. I treat 'em just like potatoes.

Next I slice it up an eat 'em straight as finger food. Oh man, they're so good and sweet. I've been eating at least one turnip a day since about the second week of October and haven't even gotten close to being tired of them!

Nice looking Santa's. I am going to try one off a triangle hope they come out half as good as yours. Never tried turnips like that either I'll give them a try also, except I can't dig any up have to be store bought.

Great idea, Dave - twice as many carvings from the same amount of wood...

As to the turnips, I used to like them raw when I was a kid, but never cared for them cooked. Haven't tried one in ages.
